Pre-requisites:
All divers must be able to dive to 20m (Advanced open water certified or equivalent), with a minimum of 20 logged dives. Minimum age: 16
For non-dive
rs: We can also teach PADI open water and Advanced open water courses plus extra dives to reach the required pre-requisite level prior to starting the Research Diver course, this would require a minimum of 14 days before the course start date.
Supplement: -590.00 Euros includes PADI open water and advanced courses, equipment plus 10 dives.
The course:
This course covers the aspects of marine research data collection and surveying techniques vital to becoming a competent marine sciences volunteer. It will increase your environmental awareness while promoting organisational skills, problem solving abilities, self confidence, and the social and technical skills needed to allow you to volunteer as part of a Marine scientific research team.
The course is separated into 8 modules; each module is divided into academic and practical sessions specifically designed to compliment each other and provide an understanding of the Tropical Marine Ecosystem. Each module is assessed by our in-house instructors and once a student has reached an acceptable level of completion of the entire course, they will be allowed to conduct supervised surveys on behalf of the Egyptian National parks authority and assist in ongoing research projects conducted by independent research organisations operating in the Red sea.
The course covers instruction in the following areas:
- Advanced buoyancy control
- Self rescue, navigation and search patterns
- Tropical marine ecology including species identification
- Topigraphical survey techniques
- Benthic surveying methodologies
- Use of lift bags
- Knots, splicing and slinging
The research diver course also includes a camel dive safari to the protected area of Ras Abu Galum, a pleasure day boat diving and excursions to Nabq mangroves and the Decompression chamber.
