RED SEA RESEARCH diver courses are designed to enable both experienced and recently qualified recreational divers to take part in marine research projects and do so with the minimum of additional on-site training or supervision. Red Sea Research courses allow SCUBA clubs and Marine environmental groups to survey, and collect relevant data to produce their own comparative environmental surveys on their local dive sites. To allow marine science students to learn and practice the practical skills needed to conduct marine research and participate in ongoing projects.

Scuba courses can be provided for non-divers and will require an additional 7 days, including 6 recreational dives.

Lift bag ascentRED SEA RESEARCH staff will help students to understand the terminology, procedures and methodology of data collection to the standards required by the International Marine research authorities. The planning and implementation of marine Topographical, Benthic, Bathymetyric,  fish and coral, census and surveying programs. We also give students a basic knowledge of Tropical marine ecology, relevant to all marine research and beneficial to all people who enjoy our Oceans and what they provide.

To become a Research diving professional, site supervisor, instructor or higher, our requirements can be achieved by either completing 1 module at a time, or participating in our package or Gap year courses. Our volunteer projects where assistants require on site training, can also  progress a students credits to become a Research diving professional.

Our Speciality Courses include, training in the safety, planning, methodology and the practical applications of Lift-bags, knots, the slinging of loads, and debris removal, relevant to marine environmental projects. Fish and Invertebrate Identification, and Coral and substrate Identification. There will be more specialities as we increase the number and variety of our projects.

Our courses aim to increase a persons environmental awareness, while promoting the organisational skills, problem solving abilities, self confidence and the social and technical skills needed to allow you to work as a part of a Marine scientific research team.


Students must be certified to dive to 18 metres, with a minimum of 10 logged dives. Proof of certification and log book must be presented upon enrolment.


A RED SEA RESEARCH Certificate of Competence will be awarded for each course successfully completed, with a Research divers log book to record completed modules, specialised courses, and any surveys or research projects in which they have actively participated.

A RED SEA RESEARCH ID card with 12 months Red Sea Research  membership will be awarded to all students completing the Advanced Eco Diver course.


Upon completing a Red Sea Research course, a Research diver will automatically become a member of Red Sea Research for 12 months from the date of certification. This allows the member to be eligible for discounts on speciality courses, seminars, workshops and other educational programs conducted by Red Sea Research and Associates. A member will also receive a quarterly news letter, and invitations to new environmental projects and field trips.

The certification ID fee is applicable once only as courses are recorded in the logbook provided and updated in the members database. The RED SEA RESEARCH certification is validated by renewing your annual membership of €10.00.

Professional Research members renewal for teaching status is €40.00 per year. If any Research diver does not log any research dives or courses within 2 years, a refresher course will be required to learn updated techniques and skills. A Research Diver can improve their skills by completing additional specialist modules, or by becoming an active volunteer in one of our long term projects, and receiving on site specialist training.

All students participating in Red Sea Research courses, must provide their own U/W watch, or computer, Diving Boots, Open backed Fins, Mask and snorkel. All other diving equipment; BCD, Regulator, Depth gauge, Wetsuit, Weights, Tanks, and Compass, will be provided. Students with their own equipment will be subject to discounts.
